A Real-Life Example From Our House (Today)
Here’s a real-life scenario that happened in our house today:
My eight-year-old was practicing piano. She’s learning a new song in a new hand position, and frustration hit fast. Tears, overwhelm, the whole thing. I wanted to help her- but I couldn’t.
I had just finished trying to regulate my three-year-old with a walk around the yard after waking her from a nap (she was not okay). The baby had just woken up and needed to be nursed. I was doing all the things… and also couldn’t physically leave where I was.
As I’m nursing the baby, I can hear my big kid at the piano getting more and more upset. So I called out, “Hey-go do a few minutes on the gymnastics bar.”
She went.
Did a few flips.
Hung upside down for a minute.
Took a deep breath.
Then she walked back over to the piano and tried again-calm, focused, and regulated.
THIS is why movement, balance, and sensory play matter.

Can you imagine being a child and having something available that immediately helps you calm your body and reset your brain? What a gift. To read more about this foldable gymnastics bar- click here
At the bottom of this post, I’m sharing the movement and balance sensory play items we personally use and love - plus a few I’ve researched and would absolutely stand behind based on experience and child development research.
Why Movement & Balance Sensory Play Matters
Children aren’t meant to sit still - no matter how much chairs, screens, and schedules try to convince us otherwise. Kids are built for movement play, and their growing brains actually depend on it.
Balance and sensory play strengthen the vestibular and proprioceptive systems, which help children understand where their bodies are in space, regulate emotions, and manage energy levels.
When kids climb, swing, jump, spin, or wobble their way across balance toys and sensory equipment, they aren’t “just playing” or being wild. They’re building gross motor skills, core strength, coordination, focus, and confidence-while also learning how to calm their bodies without a screen or a meltdown over the wrong snack.
That’s why movement-based sensory play toys for kids aren’t optional extras or trendy parenting purchases. They’re essential tools for sensory regulation, emotional development, and real-life learning.
What We Have & Love
Stepping Stones
We have this set of stackable stepping stones, and my kids love creating obstacle courses and playing the floor is lava.
What I’d Buy Again
These include more stepping stones and are taller than what we have. If I were starting over, this is probably the set I’d choose.
Balance Beam + Stepping Blocks
My kids love combining these with the stepping stones above to create the ultimate balance challenge.
Sit-N-Spin
This one looks amazing—tall off the ground, lightweight, and with a rubber grip base for safety and floor protection. Ours is an old-school version from my childhood, but if I were buying a new one, this is exactly what I’d get.
Play Dumbbells
My kids love to “work out” with me, but real dumbbells are too heavy for the littles. These are adorable, lightweight, and perfect for getting energy out.
Liquid Textured Floor Tiles
These are the perfect sensory gift for babies through big kids. Anytime something squishy hits the floor, my kids flock to it-so I’m ordering these now. Baby number four will love crawling on them too.
Balance Boards (A Total Game Changer)
We (Santa 😉) got our kids a balance board for Christmas to help with regulation- especially during homework. My oldest stands on it while doing math in the kitchen, and the difference has been huge.
Before this, homework was full of battles about movement and focus. Now she gets movement and focus at the same time.
What We Have
Durable, floor-friendly, and something that will grow with our kids.
Fun Sensory Option
Includes a maze and squishy silicone for extra sensory input.
Core-Focused Option
Also works the core… which I probably should’ve bought for myself postpartum.
The Holy Grail
This Gibbon board was our dream option, but it wasn’t in the budget this Christmas.
Sensory Swing
Last year, my oldest ran a lemonade stand to buy this for her room. It’s inexpensive, fairly easy to install, and a huge hit. I don’t think I’ve ever walked into her room without her hopping on it.
Honorable Mention: Gymnastics Bar
Even though I have an entire post dedicated to this, it deserves a shoutout. This folding gymnastics bar lives in our living room-and I don’t even care. It gets used constantly, which is the best kind of toy.
Sensory play doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive to be meaningful. With a few intentional materials and a little creativity, you can support your child’s development while encouraging curiosity, calm, and confidence. Start small, follow their lead, and enjoy the magic that happens when learning feels like play.
